按照Enright等人的研究发现,宽恕的发展存在着明显的年龄阶段性差异,同时,在宽恕与公平发展之间也存在着明显的关系。公平与宗教和其中的不同性别个体之间的关系并不明显。这些似乎与宽恕发展理论的关系都不太大。
就像Kohlberg当年所做的研究一样,Enright和他的同事们提出宽恕与一定的个人发展阶段有关。在参考了Kohlberg的公平发展水平模型之后,他们发现青少年有关宽恕的理由儿童或成人初期不同。在这个阶段上他们看待宽恕的态度经常会受到来自同伴的劝说而改变。大部分青少年会在约十二三岁时进入第三阶段,并在到十五六岁的时候稳定下来。与之相对应的,儿童大都处在第二阶段,成人初期则处在第四阶段。Enright和他的同事们在较近期的研究中已经进一步证明了宽恕(和寻求宽恕的倾向)会伴随着人们的生命历程而逐渐发展成熟[28],其他一些学者的理论和经验研究也都已经证明了这一观点[29][30]。
2.宽恕在咨询与临床心理学中的作用
与纯粹理论化和概念化研究迥然不同,从20世纪80年代开始,学术界开始出现了一些关注宽恕与人类心理健康和心理治疗相关命题的研究。根据McCulloght和Worthington(1994)的统计,在80年代发表的绝大多数有关讨论宽恕概念的文章都是由临床工作者们写出来的并且它们也都是发表在有关临床心理学的杂志上供临床工作者阅读的[11]。在当时发表的许多有影响的文章都指出了宽恕对于心理健康的积极促进作用,并且,DiBlasio等人的研究还特别提到了当时的许多临床工作者们都已经把宽恕应用到了治疗实践[30]。及至90年代中期,在一些科学文献中开始出现了一些有关在咨询和治疗中的宽恕问题的纯粹经验研究。Enright等人在临床心理学的一些主要杂志中都讨论了有关宽恕在应用于各种不同人群中的价值[31]。
3.宽恕在人格和社会心理学中的应用
除此之外,在80年代和90年代期间,许多研究者还尝试探讨宽恕的潜在社会心理法则。这些研究发现人们对冒犯者的宽恕意愿可以通过多种社会认识特性加以解释,诸如冒犯者觉察到的责任、意图及动机,以及冒犯行为的严重性等。在最近几年的人格和社会心理学杂志中发表的新近理论研究显示,宽恕研究正在试图对多种理论观点进行整合。
很多西方学者在回顾有关宽恕研究时认为,这方面的一项最重要的事件要归之于美国约翰·坦普尔顿研究基金会的关于宽恕研究计划的工作。有超过100个小组提供了有关的研究计划书。并且,由于这些计划书最终成了约翰·坦普尔顿基金会启动宽恕研究的全部内容,这个基金会最终资助了将近30个实验室做了三年有关宽恕的研究工作。虽然这并不足够说明宽恕研究因此而得以繁荣,但至少可以看出心理学界对于宽恕研究的兴趣正在日益兴盛,并且可以预见在21世纪会得到更大的发展。
总结以上宽恕研究的发展历程,可以看出,尽管心理学对于宽恕的研究还是非常的零散和不成熟,但在过去短短的一二十年中已经开始显示出良好的发展势头。而且除了哲学之外,医学,政治科学,教育等越来越多的科学领域都开始对此显示出浓厚的兴趣并介入到这个研究中来,宽恕研究在21世纪正展现出诱人的发展前景。当然,可以肯定的是,宽恕并不是拯救人类所有问题的灵丹妙药,宽恕的最大功用是能够有效地医治创伤。虽然从早期的宗教研究算起,在这方面人们已经进行了数千年的探索,但科学的探索还只是刚刚开始。
